The Softube Weiss Exciter is a groundbreaking addition to the world of audio mastering, offering a transparent approach to harmonic enhancement. Developed in collaboration with Weiss Engineering, this plugin stands out by adding harmonic content that feels inherently part of the original sound, without the overprocessed artifacts common in traditional exciters. Understanding Audio Exciters An audio exciter is a type of signal processing tool used to improve the perceived clarity, brightness, and presence of audio recordings. Unlike equalizers, which amplify or attenuate existing frequency content, exciters work by generating and adding new harmonic frequencies to a signal. This process is often referred to as harmonic synthesis or enhancement. Exciters typically focus on the high and upper-mid frequency ranges, where subtle harmonic distortion can provide a sense of sparkle or "air" that makes a mix feel more lively and open. This is especially useful in digital recordings, which can sometimes sound overly clean or sterile. When used correctly, exciters can restore life to dull tracks, clarify vocals, and add a sheen to acoustic instruments, cymbals, and even entire mixes. Technically, exciters work by isolating certain frequency bands and applying non-linear processing, such as phase shifting, wave shaping, or harmonic distortion. The processed signal is then blended back with the original signal to create the enhanced sound. Many modern exciters also include controls for harmonic intensity, mix level, frequency targeting, and saturation type, offering engineers precise control over the effect. In mastering, exciters can be applied subtly to add polish and presence to a finished track. In mixing, they can be used more creatively—on vocals to enhance diction and presence, on drums to add bite to snares and cymbals, or on guitars to increase articulation. Historical Context The modern audio exciter concept originated in the 1970s with the launch of the Aphex Aural Exciter. The story goes that engineers at Aphex Systems discovered that by introducing controlled harmonic distortion and phase manipulation, they could dramatically enhance the perceived clarity and brightness of a signal—particularly on tape-based recordings. This accidental discovery turned into a revolutionary product. The original Aphex Aural Exciter became an immediate hit with top-tier studios and producers, used on classic recordings by artists like Fleetwood Mac, Paul McCartney, and James Taylor. Studios would even rent Aphex units by the hour due to their high cost and demand. As digital technology evolved, exciters transitioned into plugin formats. Software versions like the BBE Sonic Maximizer, Waves Aphex Vintage Aural Exciter, and now the Softube Weiss Exciter, have continued to innovate the concept, offering more transparency and control than ever before. Today, exciters are not just tools for fixing dull recordings—they’re creative devices that play a central role in shaping the tone, energy, and character of modern music. The Weiss Exciter: A Transparent Approach The Weiss Exciter distinguishes itself by offering a transparent method of harmonic excitation, preserving the integrity of the original mix. Key features include: Adaptive Non-Linearities: Ensures consistent harmonic generation across varying signal levels, preventing unwanted distortion. Mastering Mode: Reduces the fundamental frequency levels within distortion, resulting in more organic-sounding enhancements. Precise Filtering: Utilizes phase-compensated filters to accurately target specific frequency ranges without introducing phase issues. Multiple Harmonic Modes: Offers four mathematically defined harmonic modes, providing flexibility in shaping the desired sound. These features collectively contribute to a subtle enhancement of vibrancy and crispness, making the Weiss Exciter a valuable tool for mastering engineers seeking to add clarity without compromising the original audio.(gearspace.com) Practical Applications The Weiss Exciter is particularly effective in mastering scenarios where a transparent enhancement is desired. It can be used to: Enhance Vocals: Add presence and clarity to vocal tracks without introducing harshness. Revive Dull Recordings: Restore brightness and detail to recordings that have lost their 'sparkle' over time. Improve Instrument Definition: Bring out the nuances in instruments, making them stand out in the mix. By carefully applying the Weiss Exciter, engineers can achieve a polished, professional sound that maintains the authenticity of the original recording. Availability and Integration The Weiss Exciter is available as a standalone plugin and is also included in the Weiss Complete Collection 2 and Flow® Mastering Suite. It supports major plugin formats, including VST, VST3, AU, and AAX, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of digital audio workstations.
